Describe the problem; most things are diagnosable by phone first.
Gas Safe registration is required by law, but the back of the ID card lists which appliances that engineer is actually qualified for. Registered on boilers does not mean qualified on your gas fire, commercial appliance or LPG.
The ID card comes out before the work starts, and we decline anything outside our categories.

KHTE Gas Services Ltd is a private limited company registered in England and Wales under company number 12436971, registered in London and trading since February 2020. The work is plumbing, heating and air-conditioning installation: boilers and heating systems, landlord gas safety records, general plumbing and air conditioning.
The useful question to ask any gas engineer is not whether they are registered but what is on the back of their card. Working on gas without Gas Safe registration is a criminal offence, and most people know to check for it. Far fewer know that the reverse of the ID card lists the specific appliance categories the engineer is qualified for — so someone entirely competent on domestic boilers may not be qualified on a gas fire, a commercial appliance, a warm air unit or LPG. An engineer working outside their categories is working unlawfully on the most dangerous installation in the building. We produce the card before starting, we publish our categories, and we refer work outside them. We also follow the unsafe situations procedure without negotiation: an appliance we have found immediately dangerous does not stay in use.
It is the legal minimum and it is not the whole picture. The back of the ID card lists the categories of gas work and appliance the engineer is qualified for. Registered on domestic boilers does not mean qualified on a gas fire, a commercial appliance or LPG. Ask for the card, read the reverse, and verify the registration with the Gas Safe Register. That applies to us as much as anyone.
Not if we have classed it as immediately dangerous. We follow the industry unsafe situations procedure, which means turning it off and capping it with your permission and attaching a warning notice, and where permission is refused in an immediately dangerous case the matter is reported as required. This is the one area where we will not defer to the occupier's preference.
At intervals of no more than twelve months, by a registered engineer. The existing tenant must get a copy of the record within twenty-eight days, a new tenant at the start of the tenancy, and records are kept for two years. Those are your duties as landlord rather than ours, so we issue promptly and remind you before the twelve months runs out.
In rented premises in England, yes, in any room used as living accommodation containing a fixed combustion appliance other than a gas cooker. We will tell you where one is required when we carry out the check. For owner-occupiers it is not mandatory everywhere but it is cheap and it detects the thing you cannot smell.
Only under F-gas certification, which we hold. Recovering or charging fluorinated refrigerant without it is unlawful and vents a potent greenhouse gas. If a system needs topping up regularly it has a leak, and repeatedly charging it rather than finding the leak is both expensive and, for larger systems, contrary to the leak checking duties on the operator.
We will not put a number on it, and the honest answer depends on water quality, how it was commissioned, whether it gets serviced and how hard it works. What we can do is commission it properly and document it, which is the part that most affects the answer and the part most often skipped.
